Hawaii Surf claim State Cup
The Hawaii Surf 2000 girls soccer team, comprising 11 players from Maui, six from Oahu and one from the Big Island, won a Hawaii State Cup title last weekend at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex on Oahu.
The team went 3-0-1 in the tournament, securing the championship with a 1-0 win over the Hawaii Slammers on Sunday. A pair of Maui players accounted for the lone goal of the match – Kainoa Dafun scored off a corner kick by Kylee Yamashita with five minutes left in the second half.
The Surf opened with a 3-0 victory over Leahi Maile Soccer Club, with goals by two Maui players – Dafun and Chai Cortez – plus Oahu’s Lauryn Oishi. Dafun assisted on a Cortez goal in a 1-1 tie with Rush Soccer Club.
Hawaii Surf’s first game on Sunday was 1-0 win over the Honolulu Bulls. Cortez scored off a deflected corner kick by Maui’s Ilihia Keawekane.
The other Maui players on the team were Mikayla Barut, Mahealani Firestine, Angelle Ferge, Darian Fernandez, Tihanee Freitas, Tehani Moikeha and Savanna Valdez. The other players were Oahu’s Presley Cook-Machado, Maiya Cook, Nicole Olanda, Tia Rodriguez and Musuai Isaia, and the Big Island’s Kaila Ambrosio.
The Surf qualified for the U.S. Club National Cup, scheduled for July in North Carolina.
