Molokai takes four-team playoff for regular-season championship
The Molokai High School softball team scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning and defeated Lanai 15-14 on Thursday in Kaunakakai to win the finale of a four-team playoff for the Maui Interscholastic League Division II regular-season title and clinch a berth in the state tournament.
Waipuna Kelly-Paleka led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and eventually scored on an error to give the Farmers (7-3) the win.
Brooke Keliihoomalu was the winning pitcher and also had a triple and four RBIs for Molokai, which trailed 8-2 entering the bottom of the second, and 13-9 going into the bottom of the sixth. Kelly-Paleka, Kelsie Espiritu-Tanabe and Kysha Kawano all finished with three hits. Espiritu-Tanabe and Kawano each had two RBIs.
Nalani Plunkett had three hits and drove in three runs for the Pine Lasses (6-4). Cherie Malacas had three hits and two RBIs.
Molokai defeated Seabury Hall 16-3 in six innings in the first round of the playoff earlier in the day, and Lanai was an 8-4 winner over Hana.
The Dragons beat the Spartans 15-6 in the third-place game.
Hana will bring a 6-4 record into the league tournament, which begins today. Seabury fell to 5-5.
