Nelson opens with 82 at Senior PGA Championship
Kirk Nelson of Kihei shot an 11-over-par 82 on Thursday in the first round of the Senior PGA Championship, leaving him in front of just two players in the field of 153.
The 54-year-old Nelson, a professional at Elleair Maui Golf Club in Kihei, had two birdies, four bogeys, three double bogeys and a triple bogey at Harbor Shores in Benton Harbor, Mich.
Nelson is one of 40 club pros in the field.
Joe Durant, a four-time winner on the PGA Tour, birdied his final hole for a 65 and a one-stroke lead on Dan Forsman, who was playing despite an arthritic left hip.
Brad Faxon had a 67, Mark Brooks and P.H. Horgan III each shot 68 and two-time Senior PGA winner Jay Haas was in the group at 69.
