Molokai seeking riflery, baseball coaches

Molokai High School is accepting applications for coaches for its air riflery and baseball teams.

Resumes must be submitted by June 30, either in person at the school’s main office, or via email to Candidates are required to have completed the National Federal High School Fundamentals in Coaching, and have a high school diploma and at least three years of coaching experience.

Flatbread fundraiser to help BasketballMaui

A fundraiser to assist BasketballMaui is scheduled for 5-10 p.m. Tuesday at Flatbread Co. in Paia.

A portion of proceeds from pizza sales during that time will assist the group.


Sprint triathlon scheduled for Aug. 9

The Xterra Adventure Fest Maui sprint triathlon, consisting of a half-mile swim, 10-mile mountain bicycle leg and three-mile trail run, is scheduled for Aug. 9 in Kapalua.

The event will also offer trail runs of three and six miles, and youth runs of one and two kilometers.

Registration can be completed at, and proceeds will help fund the extension of the Kapalua coastal trail.

Free cardio tennis clinics are scheduled for Sunday from 8 to 9 a.m. at Wailea Tennis Club, and from 5 to 6 p.m. at Kalama Park in Kihei.

A three-on-three basketball tournament for boys and girls 8-18 years old is scheduled for July 5 at the outdoor courts at Kamehameha Schools Maui in Pukalani.

The entry fee is $5 per player, and teams are guaranteed at least three games.

Lanai High School awards presented

Tavian Del Rosario was named Lanai High School’s outstanding male athlete of the school year, and Norlyn Ca-bonce was named the top female, at the school’s awards banquet Wednesday.

Cabonce also received the female scholar-athlete award, was named the most inspirational female athlete and received the girls wrestling coach award.

Karla Calso received the female sportsmanship award, and coaches awards in cross country and tennis. Cody Patterson received the male scholar-athlete award and boys tennis coach award. Jay Ryan Ballesteros was named the most inspirational male athlete. Kasey Sabin received the male sportsmanship award.

Johnson aces No. 7 at Elleair

Jennifer Johnson of San Clemente, Calif., recorded a hole-in-one Thursday at Elleair Maui Golf Club in Kihei.

Johnson aced the seventh hole, using a 7-iron for the 117-yard shot, which was witnessed by Steve Johnson and Tage Johnson.


Obstacle challenge scheduled for July 12

The Ikaika Nui Extreme Obstacle Challenge is scheduled for 7 a.m. on July 12 at Men-des Ranch in Wailuku.

The untimed event will have 12 to 14 obstacles. Individual participants and four-person teams are being accepted, and a shorter keiki course is also planned. All finishers will receive a medal and T-shirt.

Surf photo event set for Saturday in Lahaina

The DoomaPhotos “Local Surfers, Local Lens” photo-graphy display is scheduled

for Saturday at LuLu’s Surf Club & Grill in the Lahaina Cannery Mall, starting at 6 p.m.

The event, for viewers of all ages, will also include a raffle that will raise funds for maintenance of the Honolua area.


Hudson wins division title at HSJGA event

Hudson Holland of Lahaina won the boys 11-12 title at last weekend’s Hawaii State Junior Golf Association tournament at Makai Golf Club on Kauai.

Holland closed with an 83 on Sunday to finish the two-round event with a 161 total, five better than the runner-up, Kauai’s Christian Ganir (86).


All-comers track and field meets scheduled

Valley Isle Road Runners’ all-comers summer track and field meets are scheduled for May 30, July 6 and July 13, all starting at 5 p.m. at War Memorial Track & Field Facility in Wailuku.

The free meets will have races at 100, 200, 400 and 800 meters and a mile, as well as a 400 relay and long jump.

Half-marathon slated for June 7

The Kahakuloa Half-Mara-thon is scheduled for 6:30 a.m. on June 7, starting adjacent to D.T. Fleming Beach in Lahaina and finishing in Kahakuloa.

The entry fee is $80 for individuals and $120 for two-person teams. Entry fees also pay for a medal, T-shirt and breakfast at the finish line.

Malafu named MVP of rugby tournament

Kutztown University sophomore Kina Malafu, a Baldwin High School graduate, was named the MVP of the Subaru Sevens rugby tournament that took place Saturday in Wilmington, Del.

Malafu totaled five tries in four matches, all wins for the Bears. He had two tries in a 17-12 victory over Temple, and one each in a 24-5 win over the Wilmington Under 23s, a 33-5 victory over Drexel and a 28-14 win over Penn State in the title match.


Krueger completes Lake Mead swim

James Krueger of Makawao, competing as the lone entrant in the 75-79 age division, completed the one-mile swim competition in Lake Mead on Saturday at the Las Vegas 10K.

Krueger finished with a time of 57 minutes, 17.5 seconds.


Nip earns all-district academic recognition

Linfield College junior Kaila Nip, a Lahainaluna High School graduate, was named a College Sports Information Directors Association/Capital One Academic All-District 8 at-large selection Thursday.

Nip, who has a 3.83 grade-point average while majoring in biology, was 13-3 at No. 2 singles and posted an 11-6 mark in second-flight doubles this season, earning second-team Northwest Conference honors and helping the Wildcats go 13-4 as a team.

Bidwell records fifth lifetime hole-in-one

Sue Bidwell of Kihei had a hole-in-one Saturday at the Wailea Gold Course.

Bidwell notched her fifth lifetime ace – and first in the United States – on the third hole, using a 5-wood for the 138-yard shot. Charles Bidwell witnessed the shot.

Sue Bidwell had already recorded three aces in Mexico and one in France.


Guile aces No. 7 at Elleair Maui Golf Club

Robert Guile of Washington state recorded a hole-in-one Friday at Elleair Maui Golf Club in Kihei.

Guile aced the seventh hole, using a hybrid club for the 167-yard shot, which was witnessed by Jerry Yip.


Roller derby matches scheduled for May 17

The Maui Roller Girls will play matches against two Big Island roller derby teams on May 17 at the basketball courts at the Central Maui Boys & Girls Club in Wailuku.

The Maui junior varsity will face the Echo City Knock Outs at 2:30 p.m., and a varsity match against the Waimea Wranglers is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

Tickets are $8 if purchased in advance at, and $10 at the gate. Admission is free for anyone with military or student identification. Spectators can bring a chair or blanket.

A portion of the matches’ proceeds will go to the Maui Humane Society.

Cortez selected for national camp

Chai Cortez, a 13-year-old from Wailuku, has been selected for the U.S. Soccer under-14 girls national team camp.

Cortez is one of 48 players headed to the June 1-8 camp in Portland, Ore.

Cortez scored three goals in four games for Hawaii Surf 2000 during last month’s Hawaii State Cup on Oahu, helping the team win a division title.


Robinson aces No. 16 at Wailea Emerald

Ricky Robinson of Pukalani recorded a hole-in-one Sunday at the Wailea Emerald Course.

Robinson aced the 16th hole, using a 7-iron for the 147-yard shot, which was witnessed by James Stephen.


Two holes-in-one recorded at Elleair

Two holes-in-one were re-corded Thursday at Elleair Maui Golf Club in Kihei.

Ronald Trachet of Kihei aced the 14th hole, and Camille Armas of San Ramona, Calif., had a hole-in-one on No. 17.

Trachet used a 7-iron for his 151-yard shot, which was witnessed by Terry Wagner, Joe Miller and Shaun Bedard.

Armas’ ace was with a pitching wedge. The 120-yarder was witnessed by Earl Armas and Richard Takase.
