Schweitzer takes Bilbao title
Stand-up paddler Zane Schweitzer of Lahaina won the Waterman League European Cup’s Bilbao World Challenge long-distance race Sunday in Spain’s Basque Country, and took the event’s overall title.
Schweitzer, who is third in this year’s Stand Up World Series standings, and fifth in the Stand Up World Tour, had finished third in the sprint race the previous day.
Casper Steinfath of Denmark, who won the sprint race, was sixth in the distance event and placed second overall.
In a separate weekend event, the GoPro Mountain Games in Vail, Colo., Spreckelsville’s Kai Lenny won the sprint race and was second in surfcross.
“Paddling my hardest at 8,000 (feet) is twice as taxing as being at sea level,” Lenny said in an email.
Lenny is second in the World Series and World Tour rankings, and has won the season titles a combined five times.
