Victorino’s return may be delayed

Boston Red Sox outfielder Shane Victorino, on the disabled list because of a strained right hamstring, sat out a third consecutive game in his minor league rehabilitation assignment Saturday.

The Red Sox had reported on their website that they hoped to have Victorino, the only Maui-born All-Star in major league history, rejoin the team during its West Coast road trip – Boston is to conclude a four-game series against the Oakland Athletics today, and begin a three-game set against the Seattle Mariners on Monday. That plan could be changed, depending on Victorino’s recovery.

Red Sox manager John Farrell was quoted by the Boston Herald as saying Victorino, 33, was not playing for Triple-A Pawtucket due to “overall general soreness.”

“We’re certainly a better team with a healthy Shane Victorino,” Farrell was quoted as saying. “That goes without saying. But we’ve got to make sure that when we do get him back that it’s for the remainder of the season.”

According to the Providence Journal, Victorino is scheduled to at least take batting practice today.

“I wouldn’t categorize it as a setback,” Farrell said in the Journal. “We just have to cautiously go to get him back to the point where we’re not overloading him.”

Victorino was placed on the DL for the second time this year on May 24 – he also missed the season’s first 22 games because of an injured right hamstring. The St. Anthony High School graduate is batting .242 in 21 games for Boston this year, with one home run and 10 RBIs.
