Central East Maui goes undefeated in pool play
After a 24-hour span that included one wild win and one blowout victory, the Central East Maui All-Stars finished pool play unbeaten at the Little League Senior (15-16) West Regional on Sunday in Ontario, Calif.
Maui completed a 14-12, eight-inning win over Upland, Calif., on Sunday morning after the game had to be postponed in the top of the seventh tied at 12-12 at 11:54 p.m. Saturday because the Jay Littleton Park lights were set on a timer to go off at midnight.
A few hours later, Maui won 15-1 in five innings over Nogales (Ariz.) National to finish 3-0 in pool play.
The game against Upland had a 45-minute rain delay and 19 errors – 10 by Maui.
Maui scored four times in the top of the first inning, but surrendered eight runs in the bottom half. Maui had a 12-9 lead after the top of the sixth, but Upland scored three in the bottom of the inning.
Maui scored both of its runs in the eighth on errors.
“The confidence is up, even off the bench, the confidence is up,” Central East Maui manager Lee Kashiwamura said.
Maui plays Corning (Calif.) in the semifinals today. The title game is Tuesday – the winner goes to the Senior World Series, scheduled for Saturday to Aug. 16 in Bangor, Maine.
Maui’s Colby Tam was 3-for-5 with a run and two RBIs against Upland, Lane Kashiwamura was 2-for-5 with four runs and an RBI, Kao Mindoro was 2-for-4 with four runs and an RBI, Skyelor Ishikawa was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and Shadd Santos was 2-for-6 with a run and an RBI.
Lane Kashiwamura pitched the final two innings Sunday.
“We got maybe three, four hours sleep, came back and played the game,” Lee Kashiwamura said. “We won and the team is pumped right now. It was a crazy, crazy game.”
He added, “We have got pretty much everybody ready (to pitch) for the semifinals and final.”
Ishikawa, Cade Echevary and Nawai Ah Yen were all 2-for-2 against Nogales, combining for four runs and three RBIs. Santos had a three-run double. Kristian Gilliland pitched an eight-hitter.
