Edison charges to win over Baldwin

WAILUKU – The Baldwin High School football team cannot be called unwilling to seek out tough nonleague opponents.

As they have frequently done for the last several years, the Bears took on a Southern California power in their opener Saturday night. Baldwin lost 49-10 to Edison, but Bears coach Keneke Pacheco saw the benefits as about 1,000 fans filed out of War Memorial Stadium.

“They are a good team, no complaints about that,” Pacheco said. “We know for sure we have got to work on our pass coverage. We did decent on the run, so that was a positive. We had some good drives, that was a positive. We have to look at the positives, we have to make our adjustments and we have to be ready for our next game. That’s what it’s all about, that’s why we do this.”

Baldwin, which had a game with Farrington canceled two weeks ago due to weather concerns, will begin its Maui Interscholastic League schedule Friday against Maui High. The Bears are the nine-time defending MIL Division I champions.

Baldwin has lost six straight games against California teams by a combined score of 271-96, dating back to 2007.

“I like playing teams of this caliber because it is a challenge and it is also good for the fans of Maui to come and see this type of football,” Pacheco said. “I would wish that we gave them a better game, I think we all feel that way. I enjoy it because it is a challenge and when you are challenged you see where you’re at, where your heart is at and where your game is at.”

The Chargers took command 21-0 in the first quarter with three long touchdown passes by Matthew Gane – Jake Favreau scored on receptions of 49 and 42 yards, and Jacob Price had a 37-yarder.

Edison forced three-and-outs on Baldwin’s first three possessions – the Bears’ initial first down came on a face-mask penalty after a 7-yard catch by Chazzaniel Sau.

The Chargers piled up 437 yards of offense in the game while allowing 111. They had a 317-45 advantage in first-half yardage while building a 35-3 lead.

Gane, who was replaced late in the first half by Grant Low-ary, was 7-for-11 passing for 185 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. Gane also ran eight times for 51 yards and a score.

Favreau caught seven passes for 146 yards and three touchdowns. His final scoring grab, on a 13-yard pass from Low-ary, made the score 42-3 and turned on the 35-point mercy-rule running clock with 5 minutes, 12 seconds left in the third quarter.

Edison third-string quarterback Bowen Blake hit Braydon Wilson with a 3-yard scoring pass with 8:52 to go to make it 49-3.

The Chargers reached the Bears’ 3-yard line early in the second quarter after a 34-yard pass from Gane to Garrett White, but Baldwin’s Laakea Kahoohanohano-Davis intercepted the next pass in the end zone with 10:44 left in the half. Kahoohanohano-Davis left the game in the second half with an elbow injury.

Baldwin’s Kelii Kaiama booted a 38-yard field goal with 16 seconds left in the first half. Taje Akaka-Foster ran 1 yard for the Bears’ touchdown with 1:48 remaining in the game, capping a 10-play, 64-yard drive.

Akaka-Foster was 14-for-28 passing for 94 yards – he had seven passes dropped.

“He looked very good tonight,” Pacheco said of his junior quarterback. “He was frustrated, we were all frustrated a little bit.”

The Chargers went 9-4 last season and finished the year ranked seventh in the Orange County Register poll.

“We have a lot of new kids and we weren’t really sure how we were going to be but our passing attack looked pretty good tonight and our defense – we felt like our defense would be pretty good,” Edison coach Dave White said. “I think they were just tired of hitting each other and playing somebody new, we wanted to come over and try to get a win.”
