HCC claims World Sprint gold in boys 16
Hawaiian Canoe Club won the boys 16 12-person 500-meter race in the International Va’a Federation’s World Sprint Championships that took place Aug. 12 to Sunday in Rio de Janeiro.
The team of Maikai Cadman, Kanui Haupu, Makoa DaSilva, Spencer VanDerKamp, Zack Ferrier, Kawai Lu’uwai, Wyatt Meyer, Kekoa Medeiros, Haena Balinbin, Cody Wendt, Keanini Aarona and Traesyn Shimoda had a time of 2 minutes, 15.18 seconds in the final. Brazil’s Rio Va’a was second in 2:33.09.
Cadman, Haupu, DaSilva, Ferrier, VanDerKamp and Lu’uwai teamed to finish second in the boys 16 six-person 500 and 1,000 races. Meyer, Medeiros, Balinbin, Wendt, Aarona and Shimoda were third in those events.
Ashley Tanga, Kahili Novikoff, Lihau Collier, Aspen Cruz Wallace, Taysia Pimentel and Ka’ulu Lu’uwai were second in the girls 19 six-person 500 and 1,000, and teamed with Makena Dougherty, Lexi Smith, Kaysha Terry-Ahkui, Vicky Naluai, Kaila Medeiros and Hi’ilei Lu’uwai to place fourth in the girls 19 12-person 500.
VanDerKamp, Mogul Lu’uwai, Adam Ferrier, Matthew Meyer, Tyson Felicilda and Palekano Pamat-Hett were third in the boys 19 six-person 500 and 1,000, and joined Cadman, Wendt, Haupu, DaSilva, Kawai Lu’uwai and Zack Ferrier for a third-place finish in the 12-person 500.
Naluai, Dougherty, Pimentel, Terry-Ahkui, Kaila Medeiros and Hi’ilei Lu’uwai took fourth in the girls 16 six-person 500 and 1,000.
