Jets release Finau in final cuts; Maiava makes Raiders’ roster

Oakland Raiders linebacker Kaluka Maiava was the only Maui County player to make a 53-player NFL roster after the New York Jets let go of defensive tackle Tevita Finau on Saturday, the deadline for final cuts around the league.

Maiava, a Baldwin High School graduate, will be entering his sixth NFL season, and second with Oakland. The 27-year- old played in nine games last year, and had 17 tackles.

Maiava has appeared in a total of 59 games with the Raiders and Cleveland Browns. He has 150 career tackles, including 4 1/2 sacks, and five forced fumbles.

The 28-year old Finau, who played at Lahainaluna and Maui High before graduating from Kahuku, played in all four of the Jets’ preseason games this year, recording six tackles, including a sack. He has also spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles, Arizona Cardinals and Dallas Cowboys, but has not been on a regular-season roster.

Two other former Maui Interscholastic players were in NFL camps this summer.

Earlier this month, the Jacksonville Jaguars put linebacker John Lotulelei on the waived/injured list. Lotulelei played for the Jaguars and Seattle Seahawks last season.

The Cardinals let go of linebacker JoJo Dickson, a Baldwin alumnus, on Monday.
