Lahainaluna defeats Kapaa with last-minute touchdown

Sione Filikitonga’s short touchdown run with five seconds left gave the Lahainaluna High School football team an 18-16 victory over Kapaa on Saturday in a preseason game at Vidinha Stadium on Kauai.

Filikitonga also accounted for each of the Lunas’ other touchdowns – on a run in the second quarter, and a pass to Jayven Paleka-Wright earlier in the fourth.

“The bottom line is we got very, very lucky,” Lahainaluna co-head coach Garret Tihada said after the game, which had four lead changes. “Some penalties on Kapaa kind of extended our drives. There’s a lot of things we know we can improve on.”

Lahainaluna, a Division II state semifinalist last year, will begin its Maui Interscholastic League schedule Friday against King Kekaulike at War Memorial Stadium in Wailuku.
