Maui wins second straight
Lane Kashiwamura hit a two-run double and scored twice during an eight-run rally in the first inning, Kaimi Gilliland pitched a two-hitter and the Central East Maui All-Stars defeated Saipan 10-0 in six innings Tuesday in a Senior League World Series game in Bangor, Maine.
Kashiwamura and Shadd Santos each finished with three RBIs. Santos was 2-for-3, with a run-scoring triple in the sixth.
“We were seeing the ball really well today,” said Maui manager Lee Kashiwamura.
Gilliland struck out four batters and walked none. He allowed just one runner past first base, and none past second.
Maui, the U.S. West regional champion, won for a second straight day and improved to 2-1 with one game remaining in its Pool A schedule, on Thursday against Maine.
“I don’t think I’m going to say too much to them about that game,” Lee Kashiwamura said. “I’m just going to tell them we need to win, and see what happens.”
Maine and Virginia are tied atop the Pool A standings with 2-0 records – those teams are scheduled to meet today.
Maui’s two wins have been by a combined score of 21-0 – both ended early due to the 10-run mercy rule, and Maui’s opponents have totaled four hits in those games.
Regarding the possibility of losing any momentum, Lee Kashiwamura said: “I don’t think it’s a big deal. I’m going try to find a batting cage, and we’ll get some swings in.”
Saipan, the Asia-Pacific representative, fell to 0-2.
