Pac-5 outscores King Kekaulike
PUKALANI – Things started well in each half for the King Kekaulike High School football team Saturday night, but the remainder was a problem in a 54-37 loss to Pac-5 at in front of about 700 fans at King Kekaulike Stadium.
The Wolfpack duo of Kainoa Ferreira and Tsubasa Brennan provided headaches for Na Alii. Ferreira, a sophomore quarterback, finished with 515 passing yards and six touchdowns – 292 of the yards and four of the touchdowns went to Brennan, who had 19 catches.
Down by 24 points late in the first half, Na Alii cut the deficit to 10 early in the third quarter, but could get no closer.
After a late touchdown in the first half, the King Kekaulike defense scored a safety early in the third quarter when a snap sailed over punter Riley Asuncion’s head and he kicked it out of the end zone.
On the ensuing possession, Na Alii scored on a 42-yard pass from Kawika Homalon to Corry Brown to cut their deficit to 34-24. Homalon, a senior quarterback, ran 20 times for 129 yards and three 1-yard touchdowns, and passed for 98 yards and two scores.
After King Kekaulike got within 10, Pac-5 responded with a gritty effort from Brennan on a 29-yard scoring strike from Ferreira. Brennan caught the ball at about the 3-yard line and carried two defenders into the end zone with 5:37 left in the quarter.
Once again, King Kekaulike battled back within 11 points on a 10-play, 57-yard drive capped by a 1-yard scoring dive by Homalon.
Pac-5 took exactly one play to respond – a 55-yard Ferreira pass to Brennan to make it 48-30 with 10:57 to go.
A 19-yard scoring run by Trevor Yee put the Wolfpack up 54-30 with 4:00 to play.
Homalon scored on a 1-yard run with 2:19 to go to account for the final score.
One bright spot for Na Alii on defense was Drevyn Tavares, who had three sacks.
Ferreira threw 44 passes in the first half, completing 24 for 350 yards and four touchdowns. He finished 34-for-62.
Pac-5 piled up 16 first downs in the first 24 minutes of play and 24 in the game.
Brennan caught 11 passes for 163 yards with touchdown receptions of 15 and 52 yards in the first half. His scores came between a 4-yard touchdown pass from Ferreira to Jarrod Infante and Sean Kinel’s 85-yard run after he was left uncovered early in the second quarter.
The Wolfpack finished a stretch of 34 unanswered points with a 1-yard run by Christian Vasconcellos with 4:13 left in the second quarter, just their third run of the game.
Na Alii went 67 yards in seven plays and scored on a fourth-and-1 dive by Homalon to cut the deficit to 34-16 with 1:31 to go in the first half.
Homalon escaped the line-of-scrimmage pile for a 70-yard run on the first offensive play of the game, and Josh Ogata caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Homalon two plays later. On their next possession, Na Alii went 37 yards in five plays and Brown nailed a 40-yard field goal into the wind.
A King Kekaulike fumble on its own 17-yard line set up Pac-5’s first score, and a pass interference penalty helped an eight-play, 74-yard scoring drive on the Wolfpack’s next possession. Brennan caught his first touchdown pass, a 15-yarder, the next time Pac-5 had the ball to make it 20-10 less than two minutes into the second quarter.
