Sabers take sole possession of first place
The Maui High School girls soccer team overcame the absence of multiple injured players and claimed sole possession of first place in the Maui Interscholastic Division I standings by beating Kamehameha Maui 2-1 on Wednesday in Kahului.
“We worked hard and just believed in ourselves,” Sabers coach Tony Medeiros said after his team improved to 4-0-0. “We got it done today.”
Maui High’s Jordan Jarvis scored on a first-half penalty kick, and Ocean Dudoit’s goal on a direct free kick in the 80th minute broke a 1-1 tie.
Quinn Williams scored for the Warriors (2-2-0) in the 69th minute.
Maui High was missing more than a half-dozen players due to injury, and three freshmen – Tehanee Freitas, Kalia Kapisi and Liliola Vehikite – were called on for significant minutes.
“Today was a pretty good testament to how hard they all worked on this team,” Medeiros said.
