Maui surfers advance at U.S. Open
Granger Larsen of Napili and Tanner Hendrickson of Haiku both advanced Tuesday as the first round wrapped up at the U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, Calif.
Larsen posted a two-wave score of 12.00 to finish in a tie with Australia’s Connor O’Leary atop the heat. Both surfers advanced, but O’Leary took the win by virtue of a tiebreaker.
Hendrickson won his heat with a score of 15.26, beating out Australia’s Jack Freestone (14.90), California’s Luke Davis (13.37) and Brazil’s Jesse Mendes (12.20).
For the second round of the World Surf League qualifying series event, Larsen will face off against South Africa’s Beyrick De Vries and Brazilians Filipe Toledo and Caio Ibelli, and Hendrickson will take on Oahu’s Joshua Moniz, Californian Dane Reynolds and New Zealand’s Billy Stairmand.
