This Week in MIL Football
King Kekaulike at Lahainaluna
Today, Sue Cooley Stadium, 7 p.m.
Overview
Lahainaluna gets its last tuneup before playing in the Division II state tournament for a 10th consecutive time. King Kekaulike is seeking to snap a 21-game Maui Interscholastic League losing streak — its last win was a 23-13 decision over Kamehameha Maui in 2014. The Lunas rank second in the league on offense and defense. Na Alii are fifth in both categories. Lahainaluna beat King Kekaulike 37-0 on Sept. 5.
Na Alii at a glance
King Kekaulike reaches the finish line of its first season under co-head coaches Tyson Valle and Dennis Dias with this game. Freshman quarterback Trey Hunter ranks 11th in the league in rushing and sixth in passing. He has a touchdown run and throw, the only two scores for Na Alii this season.
Lunas at a glance
Lahainaluna is expected to host a state tournament quarterfinal on Nov. 4, most likely as part of a doubleheader at War Memorial Stadium. Etuati Storer and Enele Scanlan rank fourth and fifth in the league, respectively, in passing. The Lunas have four of the MIL’s top nine rushers, led by Elijah Ragudo.
Maui High vs. Baldwin
Saturday, War Memorial Stadium, 7 p.m.
Overview
Baldwin’s top-ranked offense meets Maui High’s top-ranked defense in a game that will decide the Division I second-round champion. A win for the Sabers would force an overall title game next week, while a win for the Bears would complete a perfect regular season and send them to the state tournament. Baldwin is third on defense, Maui High is third on offense. The Bears beat the Sabers 36-21 on Sept. 5.
Bears at a glance
Receiver Damien Awai is back after missing last week’s game on a baseball showcase trip. Kicker/running back Bishop Wickes is also at full-go status after being limited last week. Chayce Akaka leads the league in passing, is fourth in rushing and is responsible for 16 touchdowns combined. Dalton Mata is fifth in receiving.
Sabers at a glance
Hanisi Lotulelei has catapulted to third on the MIL rushing list after totaling 468 yards in his last three games, and tops the scoring list after rushing for eight touchdowns in the last two games. L.J. Lindsey is the league’s top-ranked receiver, while John-Michael Mokiao-Duvauchelle is third in passing.
