Maui Pro resumes; quarterfinals set
Four Hawaii surfers advanced to the quarterfinals of the World Surf League Maui Pro on Friday as competition resumed after eight straight lay days at Honolua Bay.
Third-round heat winners, who got byes to the quarterfinals of this women’s championship tour event, included Kauai’s Tatiana Weston-Webb and Malia Manuel, and Oahu’s Coco Ho.
Three-time world champion and two-time defending event champion Carissa Moore of Oahu had a two-wave score of 9.25 to place just behind Manuel (9.57) in the final third-round heat, sending her to the elimination round. Moore then advanced by defeating Oahu’s Alessa Quizon 11.50-4.77.
Also needing a win was reigning world champion Tyler Wright of Australia. She earned her quarterfinal spot by posting a 15.00, the highest total of the day, to defeat Oahu qualifier Brisa Hennessy (11.90).
Wright will face Weston-Webb in the first quarterfinal when competition resumes. Ho takes on Australia’s Keely Andrew, Californian Courtney Conlogue faces Bianca Buitendag of South Africa, and Moore takes on Manuel.
Six-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore of Australia was eliminated by Andrew in the fourth round.
