Seabury on verge of canoe season sweep
Seabury Hall’s boys, girls and mixed canoe paddling crews all took first place in Maui Interscholastic League regatta No. 4 on Saturday at Kahului Harbor, moving the team within one week of its second regular-season sweep in three years.
The mixed crew won its 16th league race in a row. Taysia Pimentel, Dylan Kresge, Kaila Medeiros, Andrew Gibbons, Hiilei Luuwai and Kainalu Kubo had a time of 4 minutes, 19.35 seconds.
Medeiros, Pimentel, Luuwai, Shea Stisher, Kiana Hyman and Kaya Givensel finished in 4:59.35 to extend the girls’ MIL winning streak to 15.
The boys crew of Kresge, Gibbons, Kubo, Robert Gibbons, Clair Peck and Dylan Newbro won in 4:03:02.
Kamehameha Maui was second in mixed (4:25.66) and boys (4:12.00), and Mo-lokai was the girls runner-up in 5:04.48.
Seabury clinched league titles in each division last week. It has won the last eight MIL championships in mixed, six in a row in girls and three straight in boys.
Kahului will host the final MIL races Saturday, and the state regatta is scheduled for Feb. 4 at Oahu’s Keehi Lagoon — Seabury won the mixed state title last year.
