Excel, Maui Cobras win HYSA Presidents’ Day Cup titles

The Excel 2005 boys and Maui Cobras 2007 boys teams won their age divisions at the Hawaii Youth Soccer Association Presidents’ Day Cup last weekend at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex on Oahu.

Excel defeated the Honolulu Bulls 2-1 on Monday to win the boys U-12 division. Excel reached the final by defeating Surf Hawaii 5-1 in the quarterfinals and the Kailua Kings 4-3 in the semifinals.

Team members of the championship squad are Zion Ah You, George Artemis, Travis Delos Santos, Cody Gima,

Akila Iguchi, Kairos Joaquin, Trenton Kiesel, Kekoa Kiesling, Kanata Kuwahara, Jenson Nakasone, Jalen Ouchi, Tidus Paet Vegas, Isaiah Peneku Castellanos and Guiness Xavier Ruiz Rockett. The head coach is Cary Ouchi, with assistants Jayson Nakasone and Eli Joaquin, and team mom Kari Ouchi.

As the Hawaii champion, Excel qualified for the U.S. Youth Soccer Region IV Mountain Pacific Championship in Norco, Calif., June 15-18.

In the boys U-10 division, the Maui Cobras defeated the Kailua Bulls 2-1 to win the championship.

The Cobras downed the Hawaii Slammers 6-0 in the quarterfinals and Whitfield 3-0 in the semifinals to make the final.

Maui Cobras ’07 members are Noah Arcas, Lorenzo Gonzalez, L. Niuhi Howard, Titus Joaquin, Kakahi Kapuaala, Zion Mock, James Notarangelo, Zion Schaffer, Austin Schlather, Joaquin Tavares and Ivan Ventura. The head coach is Brian Ventura, with assistants Ignacio Arcas and Eli Joaquin.

All four boys finals Monday included a Maui team — other finalists were the Maui Cobras 2008 boys, who lost to the Kailua Bulls 2-1 at U-9, and the Maui United 2006 boys, who lost 2-0 to the Hawaii Slammers at U-11.
