Late goals help Chargers beat Bears

Spartans advance to D-II semifinals with 4-3 victory over Marauders

The Maui News – The Baldwin High School girls soccer team hoped to emerge the victor this time against Pearl City in the Queen’s Medical Center Division I State Championship.

A three-minute span in the second half led to yet another disappointing result at the hands of the Chargers.

Pearl City scored in the 65th and 67th minutes to rally past the Bears 2-1 on Thursday night at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex on Oahu in a quarterfinal meeting that was a rematch of last year’s state championship game, won by the Chargers 3-0.

This time around, Baldwin (11-1-1) struck first when Skylar Littlefield scored in the 26th minute.

Sunshine Fontes netted the equalizer and Daelenn Tokunaga knocked in the game-winner for Pearl City (11-3-1).

The Bears, champions of the Maui Interscholastic League, play Castle in a consolation game today.

In a Division II quarterfinal, Makena Dougherty scored two goals to help MIL champion Seabury Hall defeat fourth-seeded Waipahu 4-3.

Dougherty — one of three Spartans who are pulling double duty this week by also playing in the girls basketball state tournament — scored the game-winner in the 76th minute. Her first goal, in the 32nd minute, tied the score at 1-1 after Kayla Carabbacan put the Marauders ahead in the third minute.

Jenna Carvalho (53rd minute) and Alissa Lei Walin (70th) also scored for Seabury (6-6-1). Carabbacan also had a goal in the 41st minute, and Karlee Manding scored Waipahu’s last goal in the 73rd.

The Spartans will take on top-seeded Hawaii Prep today in the semifinals.
