Lenny captures Sunset Beach Pro title

Kai Lenny of Spreckelsville won the season-opening Sunset Beach Pro on Thursday, dominating the final of the Association of Paddling Professionals World Tour event on Oahu’s North Shore.
Lenny, winner of seven series titles under the tour’s previous name, the Waterman League, posted a score of 18.50 in the final, beating out Kahului’s Bernd Roediger (11.80), Florida’s Giorgio Gomez (10.93) and Oahu’s Mo Freitas (10.50).
Earlier in the day, Lenny won his quarterfinal heat with a 17.00 and finished second to Freitas in the semifinals with a 14.33.
Roediger placed second in his quarterfinal and semifinal heats with scores of 9.57 and 10.53, respectively.
Haiku’s Kody Kerbox was eliminated in the quarterfinals, placing fourth in Lenny’s heat with a 7.30.
In the women’s final, Florida’s Izzi Gomez edged Oregon’s Fiona Wylde for the championship.
The next stop on the APP World Tour is the Maui Pro-Am, set for March 10-12 at Kanaha Beach Park in Kahului. While the Sunset Beach Pro was a surfing event, the Maui Pro-Am is a race.
