Lee, Guzman take early leads

WAIEHU — A teammate and the two-time defending champion are both within striking distance, but St. Anthony High School junior Chad Lee will enjoy his lead after the opening round of the Maui In-terscholastic League individual golf championship.

Lee was the only golfer — boy or girl — in red numbers after he fired a 1-under-par 71 in windy conditions Saturday at Waiehu Municipal Golf Course.

Noah Miller, a St. Anthony senior, was two shots back, and Baldwin’s Justin Arcano, a University of Hawaii signee seeking a third consecutive MIL title, carded a 74.

“It was gusting up. It was really hard to putt because of the wind, you couldn’t keep your balance well,” said Lee, who played in the first group of the day with Arcano and Maui High’s Jordan Terada (76).

“We play with each other every day, so it was like every other week when we play together, but it had some kind of competitiveness to it,” Lee said. “We had fun.”

Maui High sophomore Reese Guzman had a 77 to take a five-shot lead in the girls competition.

“It was super windy today and the greens were really, really bumpy, so it was kind of unpredictable when you putt,” Guzman said.

Baldwin’s Katherine Swor and Jaelin Ishikawa were tied for second.

“I think that I didn’t play my best because I had some shots where I could have gotten pars, I could have gotten birdies,” Swor said.

Before Miller had finished, Lee said he expects Arcano to make a charge.

“I just have got to play my game,” Lee said. “He’s a really good player, so just stick to my game plan, make solid shots, solid putts, just stay focused and then just play my game, let him play his.”

The tournament will continue each of the next three Saturdays, at Makena, Kaanapali and Kapalua.

“I still have three more rounds,” Arcano said.

Miller, a senior, said he and Lee have pushed each other all season and the rest of the tournament will be no different.

“It’s going to be interesting,” Miller said. “We’re going to try to go at each other and see who can come out on top. It’ll be fun. … We push each other a lot at practice, we’ll

also mess around, we’ll joke around, kind of feed off each other both ways.”

Miller chipped in for eagle from 20 yards away on No. 3.

“That kind of got me going,” he said. “That was nice.”

Miller recovered from three bogeys in a four-hole stretch on the back nine with a birdie on the 17th.

“Up-and-down round, for sure,” Miller said. “I’m fairly happy with a 73. I just wanted to go out, post something around par, so 73, I’m OK with it.”
