WAILUKU — Rain or shine — in this case rain — the Baldwin High School boys and Seabury Hall girls keep reeling off Maui Interscholastic League championships.

Rey Cadiz swept the hurdle events and anchored a winning relay team to help the Bears roll to a 12th straight MIL title Saturday at Yamamoto Track & Field Facility, and Ava Shipman collected four gold medals in leading the Spartans to a fifth consecutive girls crown.

“It’s always about keeping Baldwin’s good name, and giving back to the people before us,” said Cadiz, who won the 110-meter hurdles in 14.87 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 40.18.

Cadiz ran the anchor leg for the Bears in the 400 relay — they had a winning time of 44.64. Baldwin also won the 1,600 relay in 3:40.13.

The Bears had six other individual winners: Kolbe Fontanilla finished first in the 800 (2:05.29), Kai Sears took the 1,500 (4:24.02), Tyler Cooper won the 3,000 (10:00.38), Chayse Tamaki was the champion in the triple jump (42 feet, 10 inches), Makana Wright had the best distance in the shot put (47-5) and Ryan Schwindler won the high jump on Friday by clearing 6-0. Fontanilla and Sears were also on the first-place 1,600 relay team.

Baldwin finished with 196 points. Lahainaluna was second with 53.

“We basically came in with the attitude that we want to build on last year, just keep on going,” said Bears coach Tracy Enos.

Shipman won the 800 in 2:20.52 and her times of 4:56.10 in the 1,500 and 12:41.35 in the 3,000 led Spartan sweeps of the top three spots. The senior also anchored the winning 1,600 relay team, which finished in 4:22.50.

“I kind of wanted to do my hardest for each one,” said Shipman, who won the state title in the 1,500 two years ago — this year’s state meet is scheduled for May 14-15 in Hilo.

Veronica Winham finished first in the 400 (1:01.80) and was also part of the 1,600 relay team for Seabury, which finished with 144 points, 40 better than second-place Baldwin.

“I’m proud of our team today,” said Spartans coach Bobby Grossman. “I thought we might be a little bit of the underdogs, but they worked hard. Nothing worth having is ever easy.”

Rain began falling steadily about halfway through the meet, and increased in intensity the rest of the way.

“For the 3,000 tonight, I was like, ‘Ooh, I can’t really see right now,’ “ Shipman said. “In the beginning, it was windy, too, it was kind of pelting you in the eyes.”

Baldwin’s Kaitlin Smith won the 100 hurdles, long jump and triple jump, and shared the high jump title with Kamehameha Maui’s Keely Logan. Kamehameha’s Ani Nitta finished first in the 100 and 200, and King Kekaulike’s Alexis Henderson took the shot put and discus titles.

Seabury Hall’s Isaiah Payne was the boys winner in the 100 and 200.
