Maui County rodeo competitors headed to national event

First photo: Daniel Miranda of Makawao and Aryka Diego of Kula head to a team roping win in the Hawaii High School Rodeo Association junior high state finals that took place May 11-14 at Parker Ranch Arena on the Big Island. Miranda received the all-around cowboy award and Diego was named reserve all-around cowgirl — they both will be part of the 12-member team that will compete in the National High School Rodeo Association junior high finals, scheduled for June 18-24 in Lebanon, Tenn. Miranda also won a state title in goat tying and teamed with Diego for a third-place finish in ribbon roping. Diego was third and Miranda fourth in the light rifle event, and Diego was the runner-up in breakaway roping. Molokai’s Kahiwa Augustiro won the state title in bull riding and is also heading to Tennessee. Maui’s Kalena Kehano was named the rookie all-around cowgirl. Second photo: Augustiro hangs on during a bull ride.
