Naleieha Regatta hosts win women’s novice A for second straight week

LAHAINA — As the Maui County Hawaiian Canoe Association grows, so does the challenge to carve out strongholds for each of the clubs.

From 14-time state champion Hawaiian Canoe Club’s keiki juggernaut to Wailea’s dominance in the men’s upper divisions to the prowess of Kihei in the masters races, the places to find a niche in the MCHCA appear to be shrinking by the week.

Kahana Canoe Club has established itself as the team to beat in the women’s novice races, claiming the A and B titles at last year’s state regatta.

Kahana was the Naleieha Regatta women’s novice A winner Saturday at Hanakao’o (Canoe) Beach Park — the host club finished the half-mile race in 4 minutes, 22.59 seconds.

“Any win is extra special, it was great, we have put in a lot of work,” said steerswoman Elana Campbell. “We earn our medals at practice and collect them on Saturdays.”

Campbell

Campbell teamed with Natalie Marcus, Jessica Loncar, Ana Farmer, Ashley Ooley and Genevieve Ruvald to finish 7.39 seconds in front of second-place Na Kai Ewalu.

Kahana, which picks its crew weekly from a pool of 18 women, is now 2-for-2 in the race this summer.

“We’ve been pushing really hard, training really hard,” Campbell said. “We have a lot of competitive girls in our club, everywhere in the club.”

First-year co-head coaches Cynthia Conrad and Danielle “Blue” Kuck, whose club won four races altogether, had the extra challenge of hosting the regatta.

“To be totally honest, during the regatta, during the event, we are all running around crazy trying to organize everything, trying to make sure all the T’s are crossed and the I’s are dotted,” Conrad said. “But the after-party is where we all just celebrate. That is where it’s really fun.”

Kahana finished fourth in the women’s novice B race for a second straight week.

“The Novice A won state gold last year. The Novice B won state gold last year. So now you have your second- and third-year A’s coming together to make one crew,” Kuck said. “They are all gold-medal winners. It’s fun, but it’s pressure. We have high expectations.”

Hawaiian, the 32-time defending MCHCA champion, won the regatta with 148 points. Kihei took second place with 81.

Hawaiian finished first in 11 keiki races, five better than its total from last week.

Five events remain in the MCHCA season.

“Every regatta is huge,” said Paul Luuwai, the keiki and men’s coach for Hawaiian.
