KAHULUI — It’s been a back-and-forth duel between Kihei Canoe Club and Lae’ula O Kai in the women’s masters races this Maui County Hawaiian Canoe Association season — and things won’t be cooling off anytime soon.

“We’ve been battling them big time,” Kihei’s Ellen Federoff said Saturday after her women’s 50 crew won its race in the Moki Kalanikau Regatta at Kahului Harbor. “The race was really tough. We’ve been chasing (their) crew for the last two weeks so today was the day that we had to win and we pulled together and it just felt great.”

Kihei, the regatta host, finished second with 90 points in occasionally rough, windy conditions during the third regatta of the season. Hawaiian won with 143.

Kihei’s other women’s 50 paddlers were Flori Leon, Susan Ramos, Ingrid Thronson, Patty Phillips and Cate Bellafiore.

“We were solid start to finish,” Federoff said after the crew finished in a time of 4 minutes, 50.89 seconds — 4.89 seconds ahead of Lae’ula O Kai. “It’s not easy turning in these conditions today, but we had a really good turn. We got stronger as the race went on, which was just amazing.”

Lae’ula O Kai, which took third in the club scoring with 73 points, was neck-and-neck with Kihei heading to the finish line.

Federoff sneaked a peak at the nearby canoe entering the final 50 meters, though it was not necessary — she used to paddle for Lae’ula O Kai, and is familiar with its steersman.

“I know Mary Kielty’s voice so well so I could hear where they were. I didn’t have to look,” Federoff said, laughing.

Thronson said she and the rest of her crew must prepare even more for next week.

“We know that they’re going to go home this week and work hard,” she said. “They’re not going to let us have it.”

In all, Kihei got five of its six wins from the masters division.

Lae’ula O Kai finished first in the women’s 55 race for the second time this year. Holly Dollar, Lei Laanui, Vannassa Au-Haupu, Kehau Keaweehu, Jauque Mulleitner and Donelle Zarko finished in 5:02.70. Kihei was second in 5:05.28.

“It’s probably going to be like that for the rest of the season,” Laanui said. “There’s always two clubs that are just back to back and that would be the both of us. We’re all friends, so that makes it even more fun to compete.”

Lae’ula O Kai captured its first win in men’s 50, with Lee Ishikawa, Reggie Balidoy, Joe Mateo, Robert Perkins, Ricky Balidoy and Paul Donovan finishing in 4:08.20.

Ricky Balidoy said his crew has paddled and “grown old together,” but rarely has time to train as a group.

“We don’t get together until the race,” he said. “We all practice on our one-mans; we run or go to the gym or surf or swim — anything to get us in shape. When we get together we kind of know what to do already.”

Kihei coach Kawika Wil-liams welcomed the competition in the masters division.

“Lae’ula is coming on strong this year — they’re a tough team,” Williams said. “We lost some guys this year so we just have to rebuild and move on.”

Williams was grateful to other clubs for helping relocate the regatta from Ka Lae Pohaku.

“Since the beach is so eroded and the possible chance of a south swell, we just decided to move it,” he said. “We have such a great club this year and so many people helped out so it was a pretty smooth transition. Everyone was well prepared. When we got here, Na Kai Ewalu was cleaning up all the stuff around here so it worked out very good, thanks to those guys.”
