Maui’s Ryley Widell selected in 7th round by Minnesota Twins
Ryley Widell, a 2015 King Kekaulike High School graduate, was selected today by the Minnesota Twins in the Major League Baseball draft with the first pick of the seventh round, 196th overall.
Widell has a scholarship awaiting at the University of North Carolina, but Eric Widell, Ryley’s father, said today via text message that Ryley Widell has informed UNC of his intention to sign with the Twins. His “approximate pick value” listed on MLB.com is $220,700.
“It’s always been a dream of mine to play professional baseball,” Ryley Widell said Friday.
He played his freshman season at Washington State and is coming off an impressive sophomore season at Central Arizona Junior College. He was ranked as the 190th prospect on MLBpipeline.com.
At Central Arizona, he was 8-2 with an earned run average of 1.98, and 115 strikeouts in 95 2/3 innings.
