The Maui News – Tyler Munetake of Wailuku advanced to the round of 16 at the Manoa Cup on Wednesday after defeating Honolulu’s Trevor Arashiro 2 and 1 in the second round of match play at Oahu Country Club.

Munetake, a Baldwin High School graduate who recently wrapped up his sophomore season at Gonzaga, took the lead for good on the fourth hole and set up a third-round meeting with Honolulu’s Remington Hirano.

Wailuku’s Chad Lee and Justin Ngan saw their runs end in the second round.

Lee dropped the first three holes and couldn’t recover in a 5-and-4 loss to Aiea’s Zackary Kaneshiro, the stroke-play medalist.

Ngan, last year’s runner-up, took an early 2-up lead on San Diego’s Go Nakatsukasa after winning the third hole, but then lost his lead on the fifth. Nakatsukasa won the sixth for the lead, and the match was squared twice after the turn, but Ngan was unable to regain the lead in a 3-and-2 defeat.

In the women’s tournament, Kahului’s Kimberlie Miyamoto never led in a 5-and-4 loss to top-seeded Mari Nishiura of Mililani.
