The Maui News – Wailuku’s Justin Ngan, Chad Lee and Tyler Munetake earned wins in the first round of match play at the Manoa Cup on Tuesday at Oahu Country Club.

Ngan, last year’s runner-up, never trailed in his match against Wailuku’s Ryan Chang, eventually winning 2 and 1. Ngan next faces Go Nakatsukasa of San Diego in the round of 32.

Unlike Ngan, Lee trailed for the majority of his match against Kaneohe’s Nick Gerard, who took a 1-up lead after the first hole and was 4 up after 10 holes. But Lee recovered to win six of the last eight holes for a 2-up victory and a second-round meeting with stroke-play medalist Zackary Kaneshiro of Aiea.

Honolulu’s Justin Chan led Munetake 1 up through 17 holes, but Munetake forced extras by winning the 18th, 4-6. He then took the match on the next hole, carding a 4 while Chan had a 5.

Lahaina’s Adam Quandt and Kihei’s Lance Migita were eliminated in the first round. Quandt lost to Alex Kam of Honolulu, 2 and 1, while Migita fell to Waipahu’s Nathan Viernes in 19 holes.

In the women’s division, Kahului’s Kimberlie Miyamoto advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-and-2 victory over Honolulu’s Keila Baladad.

In the longest match of the day — and the only women’s match to go extra holes — Wailuku’s Kaylee Shimizu lost to Kapolei’s Alanis Sakuma in 21 holes.

Miyamoto next plays stroke-play medalist Mari Nishiura of Mililani in a quarterfinal today. Semifinals are set for Thursday and final for Friday.

For the open division, the round of 32 is today, followed by the round of 16 on Thursday. The quarterfinal and semifinal rounds are scheduled for Friday, and the final is Saturday.
