Central reaches final day of Majors state tournament

The Maui News – Levi Maddela hit a two-run homer and finished with five RBIs as Central East Maui beat Kawaihau, Kauai, 11-3 on Sunday in a Hawaii State Little League Major (11-12) Division state tournament elimination game at Pu’uki Field in Waialua, Oahu, advancing to the final day of the event.

Zach Dando scored four runs and Anu Chaves was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored for Central, which will need two wins over Hilo today to claim a spot in the West Regional, which begins Aug. 6 in San Bernardino, Calif.

Hilo defeated Central 2-0 on Saturday — Central had been 5-0 in the postseason until then, outscoring opponents 51-6.

At the Minors (9-10) state tournament in Kailua, Oahu, Maui won 12-1 over Honolulu, and will play for the title on Tuesday against the winner of today’s game between Honolulu and Hilo.

The Minors Division does not have a regional tournament or World Series.

Central’s Intermediate (12-13) team, playing in a regional in Nogales, Ariz., had the resumption of its game with Abbott O’Rabbit of Anchorage, Alaska, postponed due to weather. That completion of that game, and Maui’s first game in bracket play, are scheduled for today. The regional runs through Wednesday, and the World Series is scheduled for July 30-Aug. 6 in Livermore, Calif.

Also today, Central is to play North Oakland, Calif., in a Senior (15-16) regional game in Sacramento, Calif. — the winner moves into Wednesday’s regional final, while the loser will play in an elimination game on Tuesday.

The World Series is scheduled for July 29-Aug. 5 in Easley, S.C.
