Central wins Senior regional opener

The Maui News – Central East Maui won its opening game in the Little League Senior (15-16) Division West Regional tournament in Sacramento, Calif., on Thursday, getting a tiebreaking RBI single from Isaiah Duarte in the fifth inning of a 4-3 victory over Sunrise, the host team.

Duarte’s infield hit brought in Jacob Chong.

Raige Bush hit an RBI single and later scored for Maui in the second inning. Konnor Palmeira also drove in a run.

Chong earned the win, allowing one hit in three scoreless innings of relief. Roy Meinen pitched a perfect seventh for the save.

Duarte finished 2-for-3 for Maui, which will next play on Saturday against Nogales, Ariz.

The winner of the double-elimination tournament, which runs through Wednesday, will play in the World Series, scheduled for July 29-Aug. 5 in Easley, S.C.

In the Intermediate (12-13) West Regional in Nogales, all of the day’s scheduled games — including Central’s meeting with Ashland, Ore. — were postponed by severe weather. Central, which opened with a 14-5 win over Sacramento, Calif., on Wednesday, will play twice today, against Ashland and San Diego’s Rancho Penasquitos.

The Intermediate tournament also runs through Wednesday. The World Series is scheduled for July 30-Aug. 6 in Livermore, Calif.
