Lae‘ula O Kai takes second at host event

KAHULUI — How does it feel to be paddling as one of the original founders of Lae’ula O Kai?

“Old,” Sharon Balidoy said with a laugh Saturday at Kahului Harbor.

Lae’ula O Kai has come a long way in its 26 years and for the first time this season overtook Kihei Canoe Club for a second-place finish in a Maui County Hawaiian Canoe Association event.

Lae’ula O Kai won five races and finished with 78 points at the Mayor’s Umeke Regatta — one better than Kihei.

Hawaiian totaled 167 points, and will attempt to clinch a 33rd consecutive county title next week.

“We love our little club,” Balidoy said. “Just to see the growth and where we are now with all the members and the next generation coming. There’s kids we coached and now we’re coaching their kids. It’s cool. It’s fun.”

Lae’ula O Kai claimed gold in the girls 12B and 18 races, as well as the women’s 40 and 55 and boys 16.

“We’re all working really hard,” said coach Mary Kielty. “It’s definitely been a good, fun summer for everyone.”

Balidoy, Kielty and Wendall DeVera are the three original members of the club paddling this season. Lae’ula O Kai started with about 50 members, but has grown to about 280.

Balidoy, who competed in the mixed 55 and open women’s races, said the club began and grew from its strongest crew, the open four. Now, one of Lae’ula O Kai’s strengths is the masters races — the club finished second in seven of 14 masters events Saturday.

“That’s because we’re getting older,” Balidoy joked. “We used to be open women and now we’re 50 and 55s.”

Kielty, who paddled in open four and women’s 50 and coaches the club’s keiki, recalled hosting the club’s first regatta, which was in honor of former Mayor Linda Lingle.

“When we first started we needed and wanted the support of the county so we chose to recognize the mayor,” Kielty said. “We’re happy to race in honor of the mayor and county.”

Balidoy and Kielty helped build Lae’ula O Kai’s clubhouse by clearing a pathway and spot at overgrown Kanaha Beach. They look forward to passing the torch to the younger paddlers.

“This morning there were 23 canoes on the water,” Kielty said. “These are maninis; little, little guys. That’s the future and we’re glad to be a part of it.”

Hawaiian will host next week’s John M. Lake Regatta, and Wailea, which on Saturday captured five men’s races — in the freshman, sophomore, junior, open four and open divisions — will host the county championships.

“We have a group of guys that attract other people, but we always have a solid core and it’s just been going good,” said Wailea coach Kekoa Cramer.
