Macedo adds NSSA national title to championship haul

First photo: Summer Macedo rides a wave Monday at Huntington Beach Pier in California on the way to winning the open women’s division in the National Scholastic Surfing Association championships, giving the 16-year-old from Lahaina a second national title in her championship-filled summer. “It’s incredible to win with the field of girls that were here,” said Macedo, who last month took the USA Surfing national championship at Lower Trestles, and claimed the title in a World Surf League junior contest in Mexico. “This win kind of completed my trifecta,” she said. “The confidence that I had with my wins was important, because Huntington can be really hard. You really need to stick with your gut. … You’ll see waves up and down the coast, and the waves are hard to line up. … It was super rippy today. The waves were shifty.” Second photo: Macedo is carried up the beach after her victory, the second in less than a week for a Maui competitor in the NSSA contests at Huntington Beach — Cole Alves won the explorer junior championship on Wednesday.
