Washington State junior Hercules Mataafa, a Lahainaluna High School graduate, was included on the watch list announced Tuesday for the Ted Hendricks Award, presented to the nation’s top defensive lineman.

Mataafa had 13 1/2 tackles, with a team-high five sacks, for the Cougars last season, and was a Pac-12 second-team selection.

The watch list has 34 players. Hendricks is a Pro Football Hall of Famer who received All-America honors three times at Miami.

Mataafa was already on the watch list for the Bronco Nagurski Trophy, presented by the Football Writers Association of America to the nation’s best defensive player, and the Bednarik Award, which is also for the nation’s top defensive player and is given by the Maxwell Football Club.
