Maui Interscholastic League teams went 1-1 on Saturday in preseason play.

Maui High School lost to Kapaa 24-7 at War Memorial Stadium in head coach Rodney Figueroa’s debut. Spencer Takitaki scored the Sabers’ touchdown on a 99-yard kickoff return in the third quarter. The game was 0-0 at halftime.

Chyson Lagunes-Rapozo put Kapaa on top with a 29-yard field goal early in the third quarter, and the Warriors made it 10-0 when Kalena Harder scored on a 12-yard run.

Takitaki immediately got the Sabers back in the game with his ensuing kickoff return. Harder scored on another 12-yard run in the fourth quarter to make it 17-3, and Ryno Banasihan added the final touchdown on a 23-yard run late in the game.

Kapaa beat the Sabers in junior varsity play, 61-0.

Defending Division II state champion Lahainaluna opened with a 20-7 win over Pearl City on Oahu.

Joshua Tihada scored on a 6-yard run in the second quarter as the Lunas trailed 7-6 at halftime. Elijah Ragudo rushed for a 33-yard touchdown and Etuati Storer added a 6-yard scoring run in the third quarter.

The Lunas rushed for 154 yards, led by Storer’s 56 yards on 14 carries. Ragudo finished with 32 yards on three carries.

Pearl City was limited to 145 total yards. The Lunas has 212 yards of offense.
