Payne moves on at U.S. Open of Surfing
Lahaina’s Dusty Payne advanced to the third round of the U.S. Open of Surfing on Wednesday in Huntington Beach, Calif.
Surfing in the 19th of 24 second-round heats in the World Surf League qualifying series event, Payne posted a score of 13.03, finishing behind only California’s Griffin Colapinto (14.50). France’s Diego Mignot had a 10.26 and Brazil’s Miguel Pupo had a 5.23.
In the third round, Payne will take on California’s Conner Coffin and Brazil’s Jadson Andre and Caio Ibelli.
In a remaining second-round heat, Kuau’s Billy Kemper faces Brazil’s Jesse Mendes, California’s Tanner Gudauskas and New Zealand’s Billy Stairmand.
Terada wins HSJGA event on Oahu
Kahului’s Jordan Terada won the boys 15-18 division of the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association Dave & Buster’s Junior Classic on Wednesday at Ewa Beach Golf Club.
Terada followed up his first-round 74 Tuesday with a 77 in the final round for a 7-over 151 total and a three-shot victory over Mililani’s Reynn Hoshide.
Wailuku’s Chad Lee finished at 161 to tie for fifth.
