Team Hawaii, which included four Maui competitors, placed fourth in the International Surfing Association World SUP and Paddleboard Championship final standings Sunday after finishing fifth in the closing event, the relay race, in Vorupor, Denmark.

Hawaii finished the contest, which began Sept. 2 in Copenhagen, with 11,279 points. Australia won with 13,001, and was followed by France (12,533) and New Zealand (12,068).

In the relay, Hawaii had a time of 18 minutes, 20.81 seconds. Australia won in 17:10.10.

The Hawaii team included Haiku’s Connor Baxter, who finished second in the men’s technical race to teammate Mo Freitas and was the runner-up in the SUP distance race as well; Pukalani’s Annie Reickert, who placed sixth in the women’s SUP technical race and seventh in the SUP sprint; and two Lahaina competitors — Zane Schweitzer, who reached the semifinals of stand-up paddle surfing, and Lara Claydon, a finalist in the women’s SUP technical race.

The title for Australia was its fifth.

“Our whole team put in so much work and I think we deserved this,” said Australia’s Shakira Westdorp, the women’s SUP surfing winner.
