Hill finishes as runner-up at junior world championships

Lahaina’s Noah Hill finished second and Wailuku’s Cody Young placed third in the boys 18 division of the International Surfing Association World Junior Championships today in Hyuga, Japan, and Summer Macedo of Lahaina finished third in the girls 18 division.

Hill had a score of 14.43 to finish behind Argentina’s Ignacio Gundesen (15.27) in the final. Hill won a repechage heat earlier in the day.

Young had a 14.17 in the final.

Hill’s performance helped the United States claim the team championship. The Hawaii team, which included Young and Macedo, finished second.

Summer Macedo had a 12.52 in the final — teammate Brisa Hennessy repeated as champion with a 16.27, and Costa Rica’s Leilani McGonagle (14.17) was second.

Macedo — who won the girls 16 world title two years ago — finished first in the repechage final. Hennessy was second in that heat.
