Suzuki closes season with 19th home run

Kurt Suzuki follows through on the 102nd home run of his career.

MIAMI (AP) — Kurt Suzuki added to his career-high home run total by hitting his 19th on Sunday as the Atlanta Braves beat the Florida Marlins 8-5 in the final game of the season for both teams.

Miami’s Giancarlo Stanton singled twice in five at-bats and finished the year with 59 home runs.

Suzuki, a Baldwin High School graduate who agreed to a one-year contract extension for 2018 with Atlanta on Sept. 22, hit a two-run homer in the third inning and finished 1-for-4. His previous best

single-season homer total was 15, with the Oakland Athletics in 2009.

Stanton batted in the leadoff spot to maximize plate appearances. His final chance for homer No. 60 came in the ninth, but he struck out against Arodys Vizcaino.

Stanton finished with 132 RBIs while batting .282.

Dan Winkler (1-1) was credited with his first major league victory after working a scoreless sixth. Vizcaino got his 14th save of the year.

Junichi Tazawa (3-5) was the losing pitcher.
