Aloha Classic windsurfing competition gets underway

Sarah Hauser of Haiku kicked off the International Windsurfing Tour Aloha Classic with a first-round win Wednesday at Hookipa Beach Park.
Hauser, last year’s runner-up in the pro women division, scored an 8.27 in the first heat of the day to beat Motoko Sato, Amanda Beenen and Bettina Gonzales.
Hauser and Sato advanced through to the third round, while Beenen and Gonzales will compete in elimination heats when competition resumes.
Also advancing to the third round were Shawna Cropas, Maria Andres, Vickey Abbott and Sabine Zola.
Two of 12 first-round pro men heats were also completed, with Boujmaa Guilloul, Kai Katchadourian, Maxime Fevrier and Chris Freeman earning spots in the third round.
The holding period for the event runs through Nov. 12.
