The Maui News
Lahaina’s Dusty Payne was eliminated from the Billabong Pipe Masters on Sunday, losing to Brazil’s Gabriel Medina in the second round of the World Surf League championship tour event at the Banzai Pipeline on Oahu’s North Shore.
Payne, a wild-card entry, lost 15.33-8.50 in the first elimination heat of the day.
Medina eventually advanced to the fourth round, as did Oahu’s John John Florence, the defending world champion. Coming into this season-ending event, Florence led the world tour standings by 3,100 points over Medina.
The Pipe Masters is also the final leg of the Vans Triple Crown.
