WAILUKU — Angelo Deloso-Flocco has seen the Baldwin High School boys soccer team grow up with him.

A co-Maui Interscholastic League Player of the Year selection last season for the Bears’ state semifinal team, Deloso-Flocco was in his element on Thursday night at War Memorial Stadium.

His goal in the 38th minute — a 20-yard rocket shot that ricocheted into the net off a defender — led the Bears to a 2-0 win over Kamehameha Maui in a match between the two perennial contenders in the Maui Interscholastic League.

“It’s great, the team is good, we’re close, we’re like a real family this year,” said Deloso-Flocco, a senior striker who spent three years at the Los Angeles Galaxy Academy before returning to the Bears as a sophomore. “We’re real together this year. It makes it a lot more fun — everybody’s on the same page, everybody’s on the same wavelength, everybody wants the same goal. It’s good.”

Deloso-Flocco has five goals in the last three matches for the Bears (4-0-1).

His dangerous cross pass in the 69th minute was knocked in by a Kamehameha defender to account for the final score. The Warriors fell to 2-2-0.

Deloso-Flocco was all over the field, in the middle of several serious chances.

“We were getting a few opportunities, we should have finished a couple more,” Deloso-Flocco said.

Baldwin coach Kaniela Palazzotto moved Deloso-Flocco to an outside spot and it worked well against the Warriors, who started six sophomores and just one senior.

“They have got some really good players,” Palazzotto said of the Warriors. “They are a little on the younger side, but they are really feisty. We started off really slow tonight. If they were a little older and a little more mature, they probably would have tucked a couple in on us early.

“We managed to weather the storm and bounce back. After that (first) 20 minutes, I think it was all us.”

Kamehameha Maui had a solid opportunity in the 44th minute when Teva Pimentel smacked a long shot off the crossbar and Samuel Ostermiller got a foot on the rebound, but he sent it over the goal. Dayne Kubo had a free kick stopped by Baldwin goalkeeper Elliot Tom in the 62nd minute.

“Like the usual, the usual competitors, Lahainaluna’s climbing in there, too,” Kamehameha Maui coach Jayson Nakasone said of the MIL. “It’s good though, it’s good for the league. So, competition all around.”
