Encinas places fourth at WCWA nationals

Alexis Encinas of Lahaina made All-American status by placing fourth at the Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association National Championships on Saturday at the Abe Lemons Arena in Oklahoma City.

Encinas, a two-state champion while at Lahainaluna High School, is a freshmen at Emmanuel College (Ga.).

Competing at 116 pounds, she defeated Samantha Smith of Lindenwood (Ill.) 5-0 and Tiana Jackson of Menlo College (Calif.) 8-2. In the quarterfinals, Encinas upset fourth-seeded Jennifer Juarez of Life (Ga.) 10-0.

She lost to eventual national champion Abby Lloyd, a senior from Simon Fraser (B.C.), in the semifinals. Encinas then defeated Victoria Smith of Southwestern Oregon 8-6 before losing her third-place match to Gabriela Ramos-Diaz of Wayland Baptist (Texas) 6-2.

Two other former Lahainaluna state champions also competed. Breanna Dudoit-Vasquez of Wayland Baptist went 2-2 at 123 pounds, while Ivy Navarro of Southwestern Oregon was 0-2 at 109 pounds.

Campbellsville (Ky.) won the team title while Encinas helped Emmanuel to a fourth-place finish.
