Spartans claim ninth straight MIL D-II title

Isaiah Payne scored 25 points to lead the Seabury Hall boys basketball team to their ninth consecutive Maui Interscholastic League Division II title with a 67-56 victory over Lanai in the MIL tournament final Friday in Lanai City.

Kama Konohia added 16 points for the Spartans (12-1), who had earned the tournament’s top seed with a regular-season playoff win over the Pine Lads on Tuesday.

Seabury led by six points after the first quarter and by 13 at the half. Lanai rallied to close within 46-41 heading into the final quarter, but the Spartans pulled away.

Naighel Calderon had 24 points to lead the Pine Lads, who end the season at 10-3.

Seabury Hall will be making its 10th straight state tournament appearance when the Snapple Division II State Championships get underway Wednesday on Oahu.
