Kaupe homers twice to lead No. 1 Huskies

Nawai Kaupe, a 2017 Maui Interscholastic League All-Star for Maui High School, smacked two home runs on Sunday for the No. 1-ranked University of Washington softball team.

Kaupe hit a homer in each of the Huskies’ two games Sunday that wrapped up the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Calif., one in a 4-1 win over Wisconsin and another in a 4-0 win over Long Beach State.

Kaupe said she had a good feeling on both homers when they left her bat.

“When I touched those home runs, I actually knew that I caught it sweet,” she said via phone Sunday night. “In my mind, I thought, ‘Yeah, it was flush,’ but the air up in Cali I had two hits practically the same feel and it wasn’t gone, so I just hoped these two home runs were gone.”

The Huskies, who ascended to the top spot in the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll last week, improved to 18-0.

Kaupe is currently hitting .304 (7-for-23) in six starts and 13 appearances, with three home runs, seven runs scored and four RBIs.
