Pietsch places sixth in 400 at ACC indoors

Daniel Pietsch, a state champion for Seabury Hall and NCAA Division III champion, finished sixth in the Atlantic Coast Conference indoor track and field championships in the 400 meters, his specialty, on Saturday at the Clemson Indoor Track & Field Complex.

Pietsch, who won the state high school 400 title in 2014 and the NCAA D-III title for Emory University in the 2016 outdoor season, now runs for Georgia Tech. The redshirt junior lowered his indoor personal record by 0.7 seconds in the ACC final, running 46.98 seconds, just 0.02 seconds behind teammate Benjamin Jean.

Pietsch and Jean ran the third and fourth legs on the Yellow Jackets’ 1,600-meter relay team that finished seventh in 3:12.61.


Young, Devault ousted at Manly Beach

Maui’s Cody Young and Imaikalani Devault were eliminated in the second round of the Vissla Sydney Surf Pro today at Manly Beach, Australia.

Young had a score of 10.43 to finish fourth and Devault (12.20) placed third in their respective heats of the World Surf League qualifying series 6,000 event.

On Tuesday, Summer Macedo advanced to the third round of the women’s QS 6,000 event at Manly. The Lahaina surfer won her second-round heat with an 11.07. Savanna Stone (9.10) was eliminated after finishing fourth in her heat.

In the third round, Macedo will take on New Zealand’s Paige Hareb, Australia’s Dimity Stoyle and California’s Alyssa Spencer.


Pickleball tournament set for March 24

The Department of Parks and Recreation will be hosting a free pickleball tournament on Saturday, March 24, at War Memorial Gym in Wailuku.

Players must register individually. Participation is limited to the first 32 players who complete a registration form.
