Casey loses to Waterson by split decision at UFC Glendale

Former Kahului strawweight Cortney Casey lost for the third time in her last four fights Saturday, falling to Michelle Waterson by split decision at the UFC Fight Night event in Glendale, Ariz.

In the first fight of the main card at Gila River Arena, Casey, who recently moved back to her native Arizona, came up just short in the judges’ scores — 29-28, 28-29, 29-28.

Waterson had 77 total strikes to Casey’s 64 and scored three takedowns. Casey had three submission attempts, including late in the fight, but Waterson was able to hold on.

Casey fell to 7-6. The 10th-ranked strawweight also lost her last fight by split decision, against Felice Herrig in December.

Waterson, ranked No. 7, improved to 15-6.

In a preliminary fight, Oahu middleweight Brad Tavares scored his fourth straight win with a third-round TKO of Krzysztof Jotko.
