Farmers take two from Spartans, clinch D-II regular-season crown

MIL BASEBALL

The Molokai High School baseball team clinched the Maui Interscholastic League Division II regular-season title with a doubleheader sweep of Seabury Hall on Friday in Kaunakakai.

Molokai (8-0) scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to win the opener 7-4. In the second game, Kekaiomalu Adachi scored the go-ahead run on Alika Balbas’ sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth in a 2-1 win.

Kaimana Nakayama was 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Farmers in the opener. Nainoa Kaahanui, Adachi and Shraedon Naeole-Starkey combined on a five-hitter.

Naeole-Starkey scored twice, smacked a double and picked up the save on the mound.

After the first run of the eighth scored on an error, Nakayama knocked in two more with a single.

In the second game, Micah Calairo-Nakagawa pitched a complete-game six-hitter for the Farmers with three strikeouts and no walks, finishing on 97 pitches.

Ben Belew threw a four-hitter for Seabury Hall (6-2) in the finale.

Balbas doubled for Molokai, while Jacob Luther doubled and Kapena Hoopai tripled for the Spartans.

The teams play their final game of the regular season today in Kaunakakai.

The Farmers can now claim the MIL’s lone berth to the state tournament by winning the league tournament next week or in a championship playoff game against the tournament winner.
