Guzman earns second straight state runner-up finish

For the second year in a row, Maui High School’s Reese Guzman finished second to Punahou’s Claire Choi in the David S. Ishii Foundation Girls State Golf Championship.

Guzman fired an even-par 72 on Wednesday to finish at 145 on the Fazio Course at Turtle Bay on Oahu, two strokes behind Choi. Choi shot 70 on Wednesday to help lead Punahou to its sixth straight team crown, a one-stroke victory over Iolani.

The Buffanblu shot 223 on Wednesday to finish at 20-over 452. Iolani shot 229 to finish at 453.

MIL team champion Baldwin finished in fifth place, 20 strokes behind Punahou.

Last season, Choi beat Guzman on the first hole of a playoff for the individual title at Kaanapali. Choi is a senior who has signed to play at Santa Clara, while Guzman is a junior who has verbally committed to Pepperdine.

Kaiser’s Malia Nam shot a 73 Wednesday to finish third at 146.

Baldwin freshman Lana Calibuso-Kwee finished tied for ninth at 150 after a second-round 76, while teammate Jaelin Ishikawa, who has signed to play at Eastern Washington in the fall, finished tied for 17th at 76–154.

Kamehameha Maui’s Hoku Nagamine finished tied for 31st at 75–161, Seabury Hall’s Summer Wong tied for 36th at 83–164, one stroke in front of teammate Joy Callinan (t39, 81–165).

Baldwin’s Katherine Swor finished tied for 44th at 83–168, Lahainaluna’s Hannah Valencia was 51st at 86–175 and the Bears’ Alexa Jackson was 62nd at 96–190.

The boys state championship starts today at the Fazio Course.
