Ngan, Shimizu pick up wins in first round of Manoa Cup

Wailuku’s Justin Ngan and Kaylee Shimizu won their opening match-play matches Tuesday at the Manoa Cup at Oahu Country Club in Honolulu.

Ngan, a Baldwin High School graduate who this spring completed his freshman season at the University of Hawaii, defeated Justin Forsythe of Honolulu 5 and 3 in the round of 64 of the open division. Ngan, who is the 14th seed following his finish in qualifying Monday, will face Robert Kim of Honolulu in the second round today.

Wailuku’s Ryan Chang and Lahaina’s Adam Quandt were eliminated in the first round. Chang lost to Honolulu’s Nick Ushijima 3 and 2, and Quandt lost to Glenn Niitani of Pearl City, Oahu, 2 and 1.

In the women’s division, Shimizu defeated Honolulu’s Mari Nakamura 4 and 3. The second-seeded Shimizu, a Baldwin graduate who recently wrapped up her sophomore season at Utah Valley University, will next face Kamie Hamada of Aiea, Oahu, in the quarterfinals.
